One of the things about slowly introducing meat back into your diet is that you start craving meals that you haven’t craved in YEARS. For me, one of those meals that I haven’t thought about until recently was Hamburger Steak. The original recipe is from Little Sunny Kitchen and while it wasn’t difficult at all, it was a bit time and attention consuming. Which, doesn’t work for us on a week night but is perfect for a weekend! It was a decent hit at our house so I wanted to share!

Classic Hamburger Steak

Ingredients (for the steaks)

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup of dried breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup of yellow onion (finely diced)
  • 1 teaspoon of Italian Seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • Sprinkles of salt and pepper

Ingredients (for the gravy)

  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium yellow onion (thinly sliced) – I just used the rest of the yellow onion from the steaks
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups of beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • Sprinkles of sale and pepper

Steps

  1. Combine your beef with the egg, breadcrumbs, onion, Italian Seasoning, salt and pepper in a large bowl. This is easiest done just by getting your hands in there! Mold into 4-5 patties (we did four) that are roughly oval shaped and 1/2 an inch thick.
  2. In a skillet (I used a cast iron), heat your olive oil over medium heat and toss in your steaks for about 5 minutes per side. You’ll want them browned before setting them aside and covering with foil.
  3. Now it’s time to start your gravy! In the same skillet, melt your butter and sauté your mushrooms and onions until the onion is translucent (4-5 minutes). Toss your garlic in for the last 30 seconds or so.
  4. While continually stirring, slowly add your flour and then your beef broth. It will start to thicken but you don’t want it to burn so stir until it’s combined well. Let this simmer for roughly 3 more minutes until it’s a thickened sauce.
  5. Finally, season with the Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper before returning the hamburger steaks to the skillet for about 5 more minutes.
  6. I served these with mashed potatoes and roasted green beans…and it was delicious!

The pictures don’t really do it justice but don’t worry, one day I’ll figure out how real bloggers take such great photos of their food! 😉 It filled the entire house with a delicious aroma and one of my kids actually tried it!
